The United States has declared that it does not have any preferred outcome of the National Super Alliance (NASA) Petition challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win at the Supreme Court.
US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec on Thursday confirmed that the country's leadership would remain impartial to the final ruling and asked the Supreme Court to use the law and factual evidence in deciding the presidential petition.
Before the Opposition filed the petition, former US Secretary of State John Kerry had advised NASA to use the legitimate process when challenging the election results.
Mr Kerry, who was leading the Kenya Elections Observers Group, confirmed that he had met with NASA leader Raila Odinga where he listened to his concerns and urged him to follow the right process in lodging the complaints.
“We call on all candidates to work within the rule of law to challenge these elections where they have evidence,” he stated.
During the elections, the Heads of Mission to Kenya issued a statement declaring that they did not have a preferred Presidential candidate.
Led by the United States Ambassador and United Kingdom High Commissioner Nic Hailey, the heads encouraged Kenyans to 'look beyond their differences to come together to ensure free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections.'
"As partners, we do not support any particular candidate or party.
"Rather, we support the democratic process and Kenyans’ right to choose their representatives and their future. As fellow democracies, we believe democracy is the best form of government, but we know too that it requires determination and commitment," read part of the statement.
